Understanding Veterinary Care

Do you remember the last time your pet started having problems? I haven't always had an easy time figuring out what was going on with my animal, which is why I started thinking more seriously about taking the right steps to make sure things were going like they should be. I began focusing more seriously on my animal, and before I knew it, I was able to determine when he was and wasn't sick. When he was sick, I always took him in to my veterinarian for service, and I feel like that has saved his life a few times. Check out this blog for more information.

3 Tips For Taking Care Of Your Rabbit

Cameron Torres

Rabbits can make great pets. They are small and easy to handle and play with. Rabbits can also live for a long time, so you can depend on rabbit you purchase for your family being around for a while.

Choose A Big Cage

The first thing you need to do is make sure that you have the right cage for your rabbit. Rabbits need room to jump and run around. They don't do well in small cages for long periods of time. Small cages really only work if you only put your rabbit in the cage overnight, and otherwise let the rabbit roam free in your backyard or in your home.

Make sure that the cage is big enough for your rabbit to be able to really move around. It should be more the size of kennel than a small cage if you really want to keep your rabbit healthy and safe.

Buy The Right Food

Second, when you have a rabbit, you want to make sure that you are feeding it the right food. Rabbits are not animals that you can get away with feeding dry food like a dog. Although you can feed your rabbit some dry rabbit food, they need fresh greens and vegetables. What your rabbit will really enjoy is a good salad every night. If you want to make feeding your rabbit more affordable, you are going to want to plant a garden for your rabbit. A container garden is easy to manage and a great way to ensure that your rabbit always has lots of fresh greens.

Take Your Rabbit to the Vet

Finally, make sure that you take your rabbit to the vet. Like other pets, there are certain vaccines that your rabbit should get to protect their overall health. Once your rabbit has its vaccines, you'll want to take your rabbit back to your vet for yearly check-ups to make sure that your rabbit is staying healthy.

If you don't want to end up with lots of baby rabbits someday, you should also get your rabbit spayed or neutered when it is old enough for the procedure.

If you are planning on getting a pet rabbit for your family, make sure that you have space for a large cage for your rabbit to play in when you are not at home. Be ready to invest in lots of green leafy vegetables for your rabbit, and make sure that you find a local vet to take care of your rabbit.

Contact a veterinarian like those at Metzger Animal Hospital if you have more questions.
