Understanding Veterinary Care

Do you remember the last time your pet started having problems? I haven't always had an easy time figuring out what was going on with my animal, which is why I started thinking more seriously about taking the right steps to make sure things were going like they should be. I began focusing more seriously on my animal, and before I knew it, I was able to determine when he was and wasn't sick. When he was sick, I always took him in to my veterinarian for service, and I feel like that has saved his life a few times. Check out this blog for more information.

How To Help Your Cat Get Over An Upset Stomach

Cameron Torres

If your cat is experiencing an upset stomach, you may be struggling to decide exactly how you can help to alleviate this problem. Thankfully, there are many ways in which you can help your cat to get over an upset stomach quickly. Here are a few of the most helpful ways.

Rest the Stomach

Your first instinct is always likely to be to feed your cat. However, when your cat has an upset stomach, the best thing you can do is to put your cat on a fast. This means that you will need to remove anything that will tempt your cat to eat. This includes canned and dry food. The best thing you can do is to simply pick up all the dried food and leave out only water for at least half the day.

Check for Dehydration

A cat that is vomiting or defecating constantly is prone to dehydration. You can check whether your cat is getting dehydrated by pulling the skin directly over your cat's shoulder. Once you pull the skin watch how quickly it snaps back into position. The skin on the shoulder of a well-hydrated cat will immediately snap back. If your cat is dehydrated, then the opposite will be true.

Bland Foods

If your cat is vomiting or suffering from diarrhea, then the best solution is to give them bland foods. Bland foods are easy to digest and will not further upset your cat's stomach. These bland foods include boiled chicken as well as boiled hamburgers, cottage cheese, and rice.  If you decide to use hamburgers make sure you pour off the fat after boiling since fat that is left on the hamburger can further upset your cat's stomach.

Hairballs

Sometimes cats vomit because of hairballs. If this is the case, there are over the counter medications that can be used to alleviate the problem. If you prefer a more natural means, then you can rub some petroleum jelly on your cat's paw. Once your cat begins to lick off the petroleum jelly, they will pass the hairball. You may also use butter or the oil from canned tuna fish to grease your cat's paw.

Once your cat starts feeling better, you can start introducing regular foods slowly, over the course of two to four days. You need to make sure that you do not rush the process since this can cause your cat to become ill again. Contact a vet office like Third  Street Veterinary for more information and assistance.
