Understanding Veterinary Care

Do you remember the last time your pet started having problems? I haven't always had an easy time figuring out what was going on with my animal, which is why I started thinking more seriously about taking the right steps to make sure things were going like they should be. I began focusing more seriously on my animal, and before I knew it, I was able to determine when he was and wasn't sick. When he was sick, I always took him in to my veterinarian for service, and I feel like that has saved his life a few times. Check out this blog for more information.

Dealing With Soft Stools In Young Kittens

Cameron Torres

Adopting kittens is an exciting time for your family. Unfortunately, it can also be a challenging one, especially if the new arrival isn't as healthy as you expected. One of the things that few people expect is loose stools. Unfortunately, it's a common occurrence, especially with young kittens. Here's a look at what you need to know if your new kitten is struggling with loose stools.

Are Loose Stools The Same As Diarrhea?

You might think that loose stools are the same as diarrhea, but they are actually two different things. Diarrhea in cats and kittens usually presents as watery, runny stools. It can sometimes be mistaken for urine because it's so watery. Loose stools are obvious bowel movements, but instead of being formed, they are mushy or may pool in the litter box.

What Causes Loose Stools In Kittens?

Loose stools can be caused by many different things. In fact, sometimes there's no obvious cause and you just have to let it run its course. With very young kittens, sometimes they'll just outgrow it. But, that doesn't mean you shouldn't have it addressed by a vet just in case. In fact, it's important that your vet evaluate any loose stool problems in your kitten.

Whether the kitten has been dewormed or not, sometimes loose stools can be caused by the presence of worms. Some dewormers don't eliminate all of the intestinal worms that kittens can contract, so you may still have a strain of worms that are plaguing your kitten. In other cases, the loose stools could be the result of an intestinal infection or a different parasitic infection. You'll need an antibiotic to eliminate this.

Another common cause for loose stools is an intolerance to a specific type of food. If your kitten has a sensitive digestive system, he or she may have loose stools until you change their food to an easily digestible variety.

How Can You Ease Loose Stools In Kittens?

In addition to having the kitten evaluated by the veterinarian, there are a few things you can do to help your kitten with loose stools. Eliminate any canned food or dry food from their diet and feed them strictly plain boiled chicken for a few days. You can add some soft cooked rice to the mixture to help bind things a bit, too.

Another option is to add plain canned pumpkin to your kitten's canned food. A tablespoon in each serving of canned food can help ease their bowel distress and firm up their stools. If neither of these things resolves the problem within a couple of days, you should make a call to a clinic like Pittsburgh Spay & Vaccination Clinic for an evaluation.
